La Reina de Los Altos Provides Easy Access to the Sandias
La Reina de Los Altos is a neighborhood in Northeast Albuquerque. It’s close to Eldorado Heights and almost encompasses the Candlelight Park neighborhood. Of course, La Reina de Los Altos translates to the “Queen of the Heights,” most likely referring to Mary, although there isn’t a lot of history recorded about this area of town or how it got its name. There are a number of libraries in the city but residents of La Reina de Los Altos are lucky to get to enjoy the Juan Tabo Public Library right there in the neighborhood. The outside is adorned with beautiful, colored mosaics. According to their website, the art is,
“Called ‘Once Upon a Storytime’ created by the Mayor’s Art Institute as a testament to the rich oral and written traditions of New Mexico. It includes imagery from more than 20 New Mexican Authors as well as a poem by an Albuquerque Poet Laureate.”
Inside the library, parents can bring their children to storytime on Thursday mornings where they can listen to a few stories and do a simple craft. They also have a unique Ukelele Lending Program where you can check out a ukelele along with a guide and a tuner.
Schools in La Reina de Los Altos
La Reine de Los Altos is home to Sunset Mesa Elementary School. It’s a private school that offers preschool and elementary school. The school features small class sizes and knows that each student learns differently, so they seek to address students according to their learning styles.
